Stay on the road. Stay obedient to the law.
Use the sidewalk. Law does not equal safety.
Assert your position and take the lane. Pretend you're a car/motorcyclist and ride closer to the middle of the road. (To be precise, where the passenger-side car-tires usually roll). (Only incompetent drivers have problem overtaking a smaller and/or slower vehicle.)
